Local organisations raise money to support cancer patients

More than 150 people in their colourful outfits, dominated by the pink colour, participated in the Breast Cancer Fun Run and Walk for the good cause.

Various local organisations in Pretoria Moot hosted their first Breast Cancer Fun Run and Walk successfully on Saturday at Run/Walk For Life in Rietondale, Pretoria.

The colourful event, attended by more than 150 people – in their pink outfits – from all over Pretoria and other parts of the Gauteng such as Johannesburg, served as a platform for raising money to support patients.

The raised funds will go towards financially struggling breast cancer patients and to create the breast cancer awareness.

“Capital Radiology and Run/Walk for Life organised the event to raise the money to support breast cancer patients and make the community aware of the illness,” event spokesperson Marlene Jordaan said, citing that a lack of information about breast cancer has led to an unnecessary loss of life.

As a result, all money generated from the event was donated to the Rietondale branch of Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) in order to help breast cancer patients, she said.

“The money will help patients who do not have medical aids or enough money to treat breast cancer.”

The organisers plan to hold it annually in October, which is declared breast cancer month.

“We are looking forward to have the Breast Cancer Fun Run and Walk every year.”

Volunteers handed out pamphlets on cancer and talked to participants about breast cancer in order to keep them better informed about the disease.

The event had two categories – a 4km and 9km run and walk – and all participants who completed the race won goodie bags.
