Better getting a ticket than dying in crash, says traffic cop boss

“Road accidents will drop significantly should all drivers obey traffic laws.”

“Getting a traffic fine is better than dying in a traffic accident,” said Gauteng traffic police chief provincial inspector Sinah Lekganyane.

“Receiving traffic fines should serve as an opportunity to realise that a mistake had been made while driving that should be corrected and never be repeated,” she told Rekord.

Lekganyane was speaking in the runup to the December holidays, which are infamous for the high number of road fatalities.

“Most accidents on our roads happen as a result of unacceptable driver behaviour. Changing this behaviour could significantly reduce accidents on the roads as well as fatalities.

“If all drivers can behave responsibly, it would be rare to see an accident on our roads.”

She urged drivers who continuously violate traffic regulations to refrain from doing so.

“Exceeding the speed limit, overtaking across barrier lines, overloading, texting while driving, jumping red traffic lights and driving while intoxicated are some of the examples of human errors which are unnecessary.”

She advised drivers issued traffic fines to take them as a warning and an indicator that they are at high risk of either being injured or losing their life or that of their loved ones in a road accident.

“They are also putting other road users at high risk of losing their lives.”

She urged family members to encourage fellow family members to obey traffic laws to prevent them from becoming a road fatality statistic.

“Many people have died along Moloto Road,” she said.

“One of the problems is that drivers overtake cross barrier lines which compromises their safety and that of fellow drivers as other road users.

“Let’s stop reckless and negligent driving.”
