Dysfunctional Sunnyside sector 2 CPF committee resuscitated

"The deputy chairperson and secretary disappeared while one of the additional members failed to attend all meetings."

The Sector 2 CPF in Sunnyside has made major changes to its committee in a bid to increase its capability of playing an important role in the fight against crime in the area.

“We have revived the dysfunctional committee to make it a well-oiled machine that is ready to effectively perform its services,” Sector 2 CPF Chairperson Themba Dindi told Rekord.

Dindi said the committee became ineffective because key members disappeared after elections that took place on January 27, at the Premier Hotel, Arcadia.

He cited that the elected committee consisted of 10 members including the chairperson, deputy chairperson, secretary, deputy secretary, treasurer, public relation officer and four additional members.

“The deputy chairperson and secretary disappeared while one of the additional members failed to attend all meetings. The public relation officer lacked commitment as she did not attend meetings without being persuaded by myself as the chairperson,” Dindi said.

A reshuffling was necessary for the committee to meet its mandate, he said, adding that additional members had to fill vacant positions.

He said the existence of the CPF committee was important in ensuring a good relationship between the police and community members for the two parties to work together in reducing crime in the area.

“Lack of partnership between the police and community members compromises residents’ safety as more of them may fall victim to crime,” he said.

He said community members should provide the information needed by the police to reduce crime.

“Criminals who terrorise community members are often known by the community and some live with them. It is, therefore, important for community members to report those criminals or their whereabouts, among others, to the police.

“A good working relationship between the police and community members reduces crime and saves the lives of many people.”
