Cash-strapped metro only able to fix two sinkholes in Centurion

The metro only managed to fix the two sinkholes, one in Alexander Road and the other in Potgieter and Clifton roads this financial year.

Centurion residents still have a long wait on their hands as the metro this financial year only managed to repair two out of 47 sinkholes, which have plagued the area in recent years.

This was as the metro only managed to fix two sinkholes; the one on Alexander Road and the other sinkhole on Potgieter and Clifton roads.

Luckily, no new sinkholes were identified since May, according to metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

The next sinkhole in line for repairs is the one in Alexander Road in line with the priority listing to which the appointment process has commenced.

It is envisaged that the process will be done by end of September 2022.

Subsequently, repair work will commence in the third quarter of the current financial year.

This is a relief for Martha Scheepers, who frequently uses Alexander Road. She said it has been a nightmare for her to manoeuvre around town, especially during peak hours.

“Traffic is terrible here in the morning with people driving their kids to school, and others going to work. It’s a headache, I tell you. It will be much better now that schools are closed,” Scheepers said.

Progress being made on Potgieter and Clifton sinkhole

Mandisa Makinana, who also resides in the area, told Rekord that she wasn’t affected by the road closures as she doesn’t often use the road to and from work.

“Honestly, this thing doesn’t affect me that much because I normally avoid the route. Also, I leave home around 08:00 and then there’s not much traffic,” Makinana added.

Meanwhile, ward councillor David Farquharson said all plans to fix the Potgieter and Clifton sinkhole were on track.

Farquharson said this while inspecting the work that was currently being done at the sinkhole site.

“It was amazing standing on the spot where the sinkhole was a few months ago. A year ago this point was 18m below ground level. Now it is just a meter to go. The last meter is going to take time as the road surface will need to be rebuilt. The service pipes also need to be cemented in,” he added.

The councillor further said residents were made aware of the City’s financial challenges, adding that there was no new project taking place at the moment.

“As all residents are aware the City is under tremendous financial pressure and no new projects should be started until funds are made available in the adjustment budget.”
