No youths show up in CPF structures

"It seems as if the youths do not want to do work on the ground but they are vocal when it comes to blaming others for crime affecting them in the area."

The Sunnyside CPF said it was worried about the local youth’s failure in taking part in its structures.

“It worries us that most youths here do not participate in our structures such as the Community Patrollers, Caretakers Forum, Business Against Crime Forum and the yet-to-be officially opened Youth Desk,” said Sunnyside CPF secretary Samuel Boshego.

“It seems as if the youths do not want to do work on the ground but they are vocal when it comes to blaming others for crime affecting them in the area.

“Without judging them, it is however worrying that some youths value entertainment more than their safety and it raises questions of responsibility. It is a big mistake to value your life less than entertainment,” he said.

Boshego said crime was a life-threatening matter that needed all residents to work together with the police to fight it.

He urged youths to use social media to make a positive contribution to the community rather than complaining without proposing possible solutions to societal problems.

“The youth has a lot of energy to express their views on crime on social media. We would like to encourage them to use that energy when it comes to attending CPF’s meetings and be part of the solution.”

He said Sunnyside had enough youths to help in making it a better place to live in.

“Sunnyside is a youthful area because it is a preferred residence to thousands of students, who come from provinces all over the country to study in the various tertiary institutions in the city. They should participate in our crime-fighting initiatives to take the baton from us older people and lead in the future.”
