Four suspects behind bars after high-speed chase in the Moot

"Two suspects were waiting in a white Toyota Starlet and as soon as they noticed the police van, they tried to escape the police."

Four men will appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court on charges of attempted theft of a motor vehicle, possession of car breaking equipment and reckless and negligent driving.

Pretoria Moot sector policing spotted the four suspects, aged between 29 and 43, in the Wonderboom South area after they were informed by a resident of a stolen vehicle battery on Tuesday, August 2.

According to Captain Anton Breedt of Pretoria Moot police, two suspects were busy trying to steal a vehicle when they spotted the police van and jumped into a getaway car.

“Two suspects were waiting in a white Toyota Starlet and as soon as they noticed the police van, they tried to escape.

“A chase ensued between the police and the suspects over several kilometres. Due to the suspects driving recklessly and endangering other motorists, police forced the vehicle off the road in Booysens Street.

“The four tried to flee but were quickly apprehended by the police,” Breedt said.

A back pack with several motor computer boxes, equipment to break car door locks and a vehicle ignition were found in the vehicle.

“Several other pieces of electrical equipment and two sets of number plates were also found inside the vehicle. Further investigation will be done to see whether these suspects can be linked to the recent rise in vehicle-related crime in the Moot policing area,” Breedt said.

Station commander of the Pretoria Moot police station, Colonel Hlengeni Giben Mashaba applauded the officers for their excellent work and swift reaction in apprehending the suspects.

“This arrest should set an example for other syndicates and car thieves in the area that police will protect the area from vehicle-related crimes,” Mashaba said.
