Green Scorpions crack down on illegal Akasia recycling business

Ten undocumented persons were taken into custody and the manager was arrested for operating the facility illegally.

The Tshwane metro’s environment management inspectorate (or “Green Scorpions”) recently shut down an illegal recycling establishment in Klerksoord, Akasia.

This was after a joint operation involving the Scorpions, Department of Home Affairs, SAPS, TMPD, environmental health practitioners and the labour department.

The Green Scorpions were assessing waste removal operations in different parts of the city and issuing strict penalties for non-compliance.

Waste recycling businesses operating illegally, or not compliant with legislature, were issued notices to rectify their respective irregularities.

The operation targeted a repeat offender in Klerksoord and resulted in the business being shut down.

Ten undocumented persons were also taken into custody as a result and the manager was arrested for operating the facility illegally.

“The City remains committed to safeguarding our environment,” agriculture and environment MMC Katlego Mathebe said in a statement.

“We will continue to work alongside stakeholders and law-enforcement officials to combat crime.”

Residents are urged to report any environmental non-compliance to greenscorpions@tshwane.gov.za.
