Bronkhorstspruit TMPD shooters get up to 20 years in jail for attempted murder

In 2015, two TMPD officers were shot and injured when they were attacked by four men.

Four men received sentences ranging from eight to 20 years in prison for the attempted murder of two TMPD officers in Bronkhorstspruit, recently.

Ngomane Polous (30) was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment, Sibanyoni James (32) to 15 years, Mdau Patrick (35) and Motau Lebogang (30) were both sentenced to eight years in jail, according to police spokesperson Constable Munyadziwa Ramovha.

They were sentenced late last month in the Bronkhorstspruit magistrate’s court after they were convicted for robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping and attempted murder.

The crimes they were sentenced for included the attack and shooting of two TMPD officers in Bronkhorstspruit back in 2015.

“On the day of the incident, the suspects hijacked a Quantum mini-bus taxi and they got stuck. TMPD officers noticed the men who were busy pushing the taxi and when the officers approached them, the men began shooting at them.”

Ramovha said the officers also shot one of the accused before they fled the scene.

The two TMPD officers were assisted by a police officer after they were shot.

“The officer was driving from Zithobeni when he noticed a vehicle signalling at the back for him to stop.

“He then stopped, only to find out that the two TMPD officers had been shot; one had sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach and the other was shot in the thigh,” Ramovha said.

“An attempted murder docket was opened and it was assigned to Detective Sergeant Pumlani Kube who worked very hard to ace this investigation.

“Through community assistance, the detective managed to arrest the suspects. One of the men who was shot by the TMPD officers was identified by a community member who contacted the police and notified them about the suspicious wounded man.”

She said the four were identified by the officers during an identification parade.

“This success achieved in court is the result of a quality investigation led by our detectives under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Matthys Strydom.

“These sentences will send a strong message to people who are involved in killings in our community,” she said.
