Metro announces the closure of libraries, museums, galleries

During the closure, library users are encouraged to access e-books on the OverDrive virtual library platform and e-newspapers and publications on the Press Reader App

The Tshwane metro has announced that all libraries, entertainment facilities and cultural facilities will be closed effective immediately.

This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the country would be going into an adjusted alert level 4 lockdown due to rampaging Covid-19 infections.

“During the closure, library users are encouraged to access e-books on the OverDrive virtual library platform and e-newspapers and publications on the Press Reader App,” said MMC for community and social development services Thabisile Vilakazi.

The metro announced that the facilities would reopen once the city received a directive from the national government. These facilities include theatres, cinemas, libraries, museums and galleries.

“Users can access and browse PressReader on any device after downloading the PressReader app.

“Through the PressReader app, users will have access to all mainstream and online news publications and magazines. Our free TshiWi-fi is available to provide data in this regard,” said Vilakazi.

The metro said residents could access both e-books and audiobooks on the provincial virtual library platform called Overdrive. Tshwane libraries were also featured on the platform.

There were 1 466 Wi-Fi hotspots active on the TshWi-Fi networks available in all seven regions of the metro.

“TshWi-Fi provides residents with 1Gb of data bundle per device, per day and uncapped access to research and educational sites,” she said.

Residents were also encouraged to register on the platform by visiting the provincial website at https://gautengs.overdrive.com.
