North residents urged to contribute to community upliftment project of public areas

The initiative offers a collaborative opportunity for communities, businesses, and organisations to join hands with the metro to maintain and enhance areas without unnecessary bureaucracy

Community leader Dana Wannenburg has urged residents and local representatives in the north of Pretoria to participate in their Community Upliftment Precinct (CUP) project.

The initiative offers a collaborative opportunity for communities, businesses, and organisations to join hands with the Tshwane metro to maintain and enhance public areas.

The CUP initiative is designed to allow residents to voluntarily contribute to improving their neighbourhoods without unnecessary bureaucracy.
It encourages residents to collaborate directly with the metro by following simple steps.

According to Wannenburg, this innovative approach creates a formal framework for residents to partner with the metro in addressing specific infrastructures issues, such as maintaining green spaces, painting and repairing sidewalks, and even filling minor potholes.

“These efforts don’t replace municipal responsibilities for essential services such as electricity, water, sanitation, and law enforcement.”

Wannenburg said it represents an opportunity for communities to take ownership of their surroundings and be active contributors to positive change.

“By working together, we can tackle challenges and create a better environment for everyone in the area,” said Wannenburg.

He said the involvement of residents is key to solving some of the ongoing service delivery issues over the years.

Wannenburg advised residents to firstly consult their ward councillors to identify presiding service challenges in their area.

“From there, they can compile a list of issues and work with the city manager’s office to develop a practical, operational plan that aligns with municipal policies.

“Once a plan is agreed upon, final approval from the metro will allow for implementation,” he said.

Wannenburg said the CUP initiative will empower residents and create a sense of shared responsibility within the metro.

“We cannot wait for the city to do everything for us. By working together, we can create sustainable solutions and ensure that our public spaces are well maintained and cared for.”
