Metro calls on residents to join fight against littering and illegal dumping in Centurion

There have been escalating incidences of flooding in the area due to litter and illegal waste disposal in stormwater drains.

The Tshwane metro has announced its commitment to tackle the pressing issues of littering and illegal dumping that have resulted in the blockage of stormwater drains in Centurion.

The blockages have significantly contributed to increased flooding in the region.

MMC for Corporate and Shared Services Kholofelo Morodi expressed deep concern over the escalating incidences of flooding exacerbated by litter and illegal waste disposal.

“Littering and illegal dumping hinders the proper drainage of rainwater, resulting in water accumulation and flooding that affect our homes, roads and public spaces,” she said.

“The city is committed to improving waste management practices and maintaining infrastructure to combat these issues.”

Morodi emphasised that the efforts of the metro alone are not sufficient.

She implored residents to take an active role in their community.

“We need the co-operation and active involvement of the community to make a lasting impact.”

The MMC outlined several practical steps residents can take to combat this pressing issue:

– Dispose of waste properly: Always use designated waste bins and collection services to ensure waste does not end up in our streets or drains.

– Report illegal dumping: Residents are encouraged to report any instances of illegal dumping to municipal authorities promptly, helping to hold offenders accountable.

– Engage in community clean-ups: Involvement in or organisation of community clean-up events can significantly aid in maintaining the cleanliness of the region and preventing blockages in stormwater systems.

Morodi believes that by working together, residents can minimise the risk of flooding and ensure that stormwater drains function efficiently.

“A cleaner environment not only enhances our quality of life but also fosters community pride and co-operation.”

She added that this collaborative effort not only addresses immediate concerns but also aligns with the mayoral executive’s commitment to improving service delivery as outlined in its 100-day Action Plan.

“By helping keep your areas clean, you will be contributing to the executive’s agenda.”

She expressed her gratitude to the residents for their ongoing support and commitment to keeping Region 4 clean and safe.
