R500k drugs recovered on N14 during weekend

The suspects reportedly tried to bribe officers, which only got added to their charges.

Pretoria Central police recently arrested two suspects after they were caught with over 200kg of drugs this past weekend.

The arrest took place on January 11 at around 15:00 during a roadblock near Kgosi Mampuru Prison on the N14.

Pretoria Central police members, the TMPD, crime prevention wardens and patrollers were alerted via a tip-off that a vehicle may be transporting drugs via the route.

“A white Hyundai with two male occupants matching the description given to officers indeed had passed through the roadblock. Once identified, it was immediately stopped and searched,” said spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise.

While searching the car, police recovered 10 bags of dagga weighing 23.3kg each, the street value of which ranges around R500 000.

Both suspects, aged 35 and 40, were arrested and charged with dealing illegal substances, bribery and illegal immigration contravention.

Station commander, Brigadier Hlengani Gibin Mashaba, commended his fellow members for the bust and urged them to continue being vigilant for these types of crimes.

The vehicle was booked at the Pretoria West Pound and the suspects were detained at the Pretoria Central police station pending investigation.

They are expected to appear at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court throughout the course of the week.
