Tshwane braces for more rain: Motorists advised to exercise caution while travelling

Heavy rainfall is expected to continue into the weekend in Tshwane.

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution to avoid accidents as continuous rain keeps falling in Pretoria this week.

The warning comes as many motorists are returning from festive season vacations, while others are entering the roads to prepare for the school year that commences next week.

Constant rainfall has also increased the chances of significant flooding on roads and low-lying areas in the Tshwane metro. Severe weather conditions are predicted to persist in the coming days, leading to the weekend.

The South African Weather Service has forecasted a 60% chance of rain for both Thursday and Friday, with similar conditions expected to continue through the weekend.

Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya has announced that the city’s regional teams and emergency services are actively working on the ground to mitigate the impact of the heavy rainfall being experienced by residents.

She stressed how important it is for motorists to exercise caution when approaching flooded roads.

According to Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane, heavy rains are likely to affect those travelling on the N1 and R101 routes between Gauteng and Limpopo.

He warned that driving conditions may be compromised by fog, which can significantly reduce visibility.

To enhance safety on the roads during this challenging weather, Zwane provided several essential tips:

– Drive at reduced speed to maintain control of your vehicle, as wet roads can be slippery.

– Increase the distance between your vehicle and the one in front to allow for longer stopping distances.

– Keep your headlights on to improve visibility and ensure you are visible to other drivers.

– Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns, as they can lead to loss of control on slippery surfaces.

– Be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists, who may also be struggling with reduced visibility and challenging conditions.

– Stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and traffic reports.

National Department of Transport spokesperson Collen Msibi has also urged motorists to switch on their headlights during the day.

He advised pedestrians to avoid crossing bridges where there is water overflow and encouraged them to use marked intersections and wear bright clothing when walking in dark areas.

“The current road crashes and fatalities are of great concern,” Msibi said.

“Motorists are urged to take responsibility for their safety and the safety of others.”
