ANC’s Eugene Modise elected Tshwane deputy mayor

The position for the second deputy mayor in the history of the metro, became vacant when the former deputy mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya from ActionSA, resigned from her position.

ANC Tshwane caucus leader Eugene Modise has been elected unopposed as the new deputy mayor for the Tshwane metropolitan municipality.

Modise was nominated by his party on Friday during a council meeting and was unchallenged.

This is due to the newly formed marriage between the ANC, EFF, ActionSA and smaller parties.

Modise is also MMC for Finance in the capital city.

The position of only the second deputy mayor in the history of the metro, became vacant when Dr Nasiphi Moya from ActionSA resigned.

Moya was elected as the new mayor after DA mayor Cilliers Brink was ousted.

Speaker of Council, Mncedi Ndzwana, saw no need for a secret ballot vote since there was only one person nominated.

“Honourable councillors, schedule 3, item 5 of the Municipal Structures Act dictates that where there is only one candidate nominated, I must declare that candidate nominated [elected]. I now, in terms of this section, declare Eugene Modise as the new executive [deputy] mayor of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan.”

In his acceptance speech, Modise said he appreciated and understood the role and duties that come with the position.

“I will not allow fear nor intimidation stand in my way of performing my functions and responsibilities.”

Modise said he refused to harbour any single drop of bitterness in his God-given beautiful soul during service delivery interaction with Tshwane residents.

“I refuse to wear the lenses of racism when serving the residents of Tshwane or carry a pinch of negativity when carrying out duties and responsibility given by this mandate.

Tshwane is very special, it prides itself in terms of education, and our conduct must resonate with reality.

I want to call all members of the council irrespective of their political affiliations to love one another so we can serve ordinary citizens with love.”

He said this current administration must thrive to make working conditions for employees safe and conducive.

Modise said all the capital projects will be supported and monitored.

“We must make sure to provide service to our residents and ensure that all people access health service and turn all white elephants projects to be beneficial.”

Modise said landfill sites must be attended to.

“We cannot be a capital city that fails to manage refuse and its own landfill sites.”
