Attorney’s RAF fraud case postponed to November

Mabunda was arrested in connection with a fraud case that was reported in 2019.

The Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday postponed the case of a 42-year-old attorney accused of fraud involving the Road Accident Fund (RAF) to November 26.

Gauteng Hawks spokesperson, Captain Lloyd Ramovha said Michael Senotse Mabunda was arrested after a summons was issued for him in connection with a case that was reported at the Pretoria North police station in August 2019.

“Mabunda was an attorney, and at the time he lodged claims with the Road Accident Fund on behalf of his clients.”

He said the RAF paid an amount of more than R10.5-million into Mabunda’s trust account, but he allegedly failed to transfer these funds to the claimants.

Ramovha said the failure to transfer the funds led to a significant financial loss for the clients that Mabunda was representing.

“Mabunda made his first court appearance on Tuesday, but his case was postponed to November 26 for further proceedings.”

Head of Gauteng Hawks Major-General Ebrahim Kadwa welcomed the arrest.

He said Mabunda’s arrest should serve as a critical reminder to all legal professionals about the importance of maintaining trust and integrity when handling client funds.

“Fraudulent activities will not be tolerated, and offenders will face the full might of the law,” said Kadwa.
