Tshwane Emergency Services said the N4 highway had been partially reopened after a 38,000-litre diesel tanker caught fire earlier on Monday.
According to spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni, the 38000-litre diesel tanker was reported on fire at about 09:54 on Monday morning.
At about 15:30, the N4 Westbound from Pretoria to Brits is still closed as authorities are busy cleaning up the spillage.
The Eastbound Brits to Pretoria is open to traffic.
Traffic was earlier rerouted while firefighters tried to control the blaze.
By 12:30, the fire was extinguished.
“Our Emergency Communication Centre received the tanker fire at about 09:54 and immediately dispatched multiple firefighting resources from Rosslyn Fire Station, Wonderboom Fire Station, Innesdale Fire, Central Fire Station, Themba Fire Station and Ga-Rankuwa Fire Station to the scene.”
Mnguni said these included two fire engines, two water tankers, one water carrier, one foam tender, two rapid intervention units, two hazardous materials units, one district commander’s uni, and one mobile command unit.
“Madibeng Fire Services were also on scene assisting with firefighting operations, namely one fire engine, one water tanker, a grassfire unit, and one Fire Safety unit.”
