West residents suffer 15-hour power outage

Lotus Gardens has been in the dark since last night and it is unclear when power will be restored.

Lotus Gardens residents in the West of Pretoria have been without electricity since last night, leaving many frustrated and inconvenienced.

Residents have complained of a noticeable increase in power outages in the area recently, which has disrupted their businesses and daily lives.

Little Manhattan resident Sinethemba Mthethwa said the power outage occurred unexpectedly around 22:30 last night.

“I was in the middle of cooking dinner when the power went out, it’s unacceptable that we’re still without electricity this morning,” she said.

How are we supposed to go about our daily lives?” asked Mthethwa.

Another resident, Jabulani Bhengu, said this was not the first time they had experienced a power outage due to cable theft.

“When will the city take concrete action to prevent this? We need reliable electricity, not constant disruptions,” he said.

Local Kota business owner Andile Zungu said the outage has lost him a lot of money, and that he will struggle to make a living if the power keeps going out.

“My refrigerators are down, and I’ve had to throw away a lot of perishable stock,” said Zungu.

In an update posted on X, the Tshwane Metro revealed that this power outage was caused by a cable theft last night, which damaged two main feeder cables supplying the Lotus Gardens Substation from Zebra Substation.

The metro said its artisans are hard at work trying to locate faults in the network.

“The testing team is working on fault finding, while the repairs team is on standby with necessary materials.

“An estimated time of restoration will be issued once both faults are identified,” said the metro.
