Eersterust local brings joy to the youth

The “aunty of Eersterust” has been hosting the festival for 26 years now and has no intention of slowing down.

Colleen Jacobs has been an Eersterust resident for the past 40 years and recently hosted over 1 000 kids for the area’s heritage festival.

The “aunty of Eersterust” has been hosting the festival for 26 years now and has no intent of slowing down as she believes that more needs to be done to help the youth in her area.

“Not a lot of people are taking note of the kids in this area and we have to challenge that,” Jacobs said.

“First, you must have a passion for it. I mean every child wants to feel special and it makes a difference in their day when you do something to make them feel special. They kept coming in during the festival, it was a blessing to see,” she said.

The festival was hosted on Heritage Day last month at Bloekomboom, Eersterust Ext 6 and Jacobs intends to host a Christmas party for the kids this December as well.

The Gauteng Department of Sports, Art & Recreation came on board as one of the sponsors of the festival and the activities included art lessons, modelling, dancing and soccer.

It was the first time that the festival was held in the park and sponsors provided food for the kids as well.

“Some of these kids are very talented and because they are not aware of and because of their environment, it can be suppressed. Kids need special attention, not to pick them out one by one because everyone is good enough,” Jacobs said.

One resident, Floyd Sehola expressed his appreciation for Jacobs’ efforts saying: “Colleen Jacobs, founder of the Eersterust heritage festival is an extraordinary phenomenal beautiful queen inside and out. We love and thank you for gathering us all together in our community and bringing such a sense of belonging, allowing our community to gather together as one. What a great leader for many of us to follow your footsteps love you to bits.”
