Family shaken by shooting at Mamelodi home

The suspect allegedly shot his companion (girlfriend) and his younger brother in Mamelodi East Section White City on Sunday around 03:00.

The family of a 41-year-old Mamelodi man has spoken out about the traumatic incident when he was arrested on attempted murder charges.

The 41-year-old was arrested in Soshanguve on Monday and he had been sought by police for allegedly shooting his girlfriend and his younger brother in Mamelodi East Section White City on Sunday around 03:00.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said the suspect was traced to and arrested in Soshanguve.

He was linked to the crime of attempted murder in Mamelodi and was found in possession of a firearm.

“It is alleged that the suspect and girlfriend were in a quarrel when his younger brother and his mother were calling him to order,” said Van Dyk.

The incident occurred at the suspect’s family home in Mamelodi.

Van Dyk said the suspect allegedly shot his girlfriend once in the left breast then the right side of the stomach and his younger brother in the leg.

Police had previously indicated that the girlfriend had died, however have since confirmed that she is in the ICU.

“The two victims are admitted at Mamelodi Regional Hospital, and the girlfriend is understood to be in a stable condition in the ICU after she sustained stomach and shoulder injuries,” he said.

He said police received information from witnesses on the scene that while the suspect was assaulting his girlfriend, his family members had tried to stop him but he insisted that he wanted her to pay him his money.

Van Dyk said the man then allegedly shot both his brother and girlfriend.

His father, who wanted to remain anonymous, told Rekord that the family was still shocked and traumatised by the events that unfolded.

He said the incident occurred at his home and that the family was awakened by loud chatter in the yard as the quarrel ensued.

Van Dyk said the suspect appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court for possession of a firearm on Tuesday.
