Councillor calls on residents to join fight against illegal dumping

Residents are urged to join the initiative of rolling out waste bins.

In a concerted effort to combat illegal dumping and promote cleanliness in Pretoria North, Ward 2 councillor Quentin Meyer launched an initiative to encourage residents to participate actively in the roll-out of municipal bins.

The initiative aims to address the immediate issues of waste management and foster a sense of community responsibility and pride in the local environment.

Illegal dumping has become a pressing concern in many urban areas, including Pretoria North.

Meyer said the accumulation of litter not only tarnishes the beauty of the community but also poses health risks and environmental hazards.

“We recently conducted our fifth bin roll-out and in order for residents to get a new bin, a copy of identification and a copy of the water and lights account is needed.”

He said the metro decided to distribute additional waste bins throughout the community, ensuring that residents have easy access to proper disposal options.

Meyer emphasised the importance of community engagement in this initiative.

“We can’t solve this issue alone; we need the co-operation of every resident.

“The roll-out of these bins is just the first step. It’s crucial that our community understands the significance of using them properly and keeping our environment,” said Meyer.

The councillor is urging residents to take ownership of their local environment by reporting any instances of illegal dumping and participating in community clean-up events.

“When we work together, we create a cleaner, safer, and more beautiful Pretoria North for everyone.

Engaging our younger generation is vital. They are the future custodians of our environment, and by involving them in these efforts, we instill values of responsibility and care for our community from an early age.”

Meyer also highlighted the economic benefits of a cleaner environment.

“A clean and well-maintained neighbourhood attracts businesses and tourism, which ultimately leads to job creation and economic growth.”

By reducing illegal dumping and improving waste management, Pretoria North can enhance its appeal and quality of life for residents.

Residents are encouraged to embrace this initiative by utilising the new bins effectively.

“Simple actions, such as properly sorting waste into recycling and generating waste bins, can impact the overall cleanliness of the area.
