Close to 20 arrested in Sunnyside weekend operations

The operation is named Operation Safer Festive Season to ensure residents are safe in the upcoming holidays.

The Sunnyside police arrested 19 suspects this weekend in a crime prevention operation aimed at reducing crime during the upcoming festive season.

Sunnyside SAPS station commander, Brigadier Matshidiso Kgoadi led the operation on October 4 alongside Visible Police Commander, Colonel MJ Steenkamp.

The operation, named Operation Safer Festive Season, was a joint effort involving various stakeholders, including the Sunnyside CPF, Gauteng Traffic inspectors and wardens, as well as patrollers.

“The primary goal of the operation was to ensure a safer festive season for the residents of Pretoria in the Sunnyside policing area.

As part of the SAPS initiatives to ramp up the fight against crimes typically occurring during the festive season in Sunnyside, the operation delivered a clear message to criminals that the SAPS would take decisive action against them.

The focus of the operation was on combating crimes such as carjacking, house robberies and business robberies, resulting in multiple arrests related to drug possession, possession of dangerous weapons, possession of suspected stolen property and public drinking,” said spokesperson Warrant Officer Asnath Malatsi.

Three people were arrested for possession of drugs, two for possession of dangerous weapons, five for possession of suspected stolen property and nine for drinking in public.

Brigadier Kgoadi commended the SAPS members and participating stakeholders for their efforts.

She emphasised the importance of collaborative action in intensifying the fight against crime as she says criminals have become more aggressive.

“We are committed to addressing the challenges posed by aggressive criminals and ensuring the safety of the community we serve. We will take decisive action to prevent them from terrorising our community as we work towards creating a safer festive season through our crime-fighting initiatives,” Brigadier Kgoadi said.
