Kiepersol Community Centre hosts annual fete

Many of the centre's members also volunteer: one lady (89) still makes pancakes.

The Kiepersol Community Centre hosted its annual kermis this past weekend in Eldoraigne.

The kermis or fete serves as a fundraising event for the community centre, which provides services to the elderly in the area.

Vendors from around the area all gather at Kiepersol to showcase the products and foods that they have to sell.

The manager of the Kiepersol Community Centre, Isabel Nel thanked all the volunteers and stall operators that participated in the event. She also says that fundraisers such as these are crucial to ensure that the centre continues operating.

“Without this funding, Kiepersol won’t be able to operate because we do not get any subsidies, so we have to fundraise ourselves. We have a second-hand shop, the fete and the weekly services we offer for the elderly,” Nel says.

Kiepersol offers its members activities such as exercise, brain exercises, meals, entertainment, live music, games, a library, bible study, a hairdresser and many more.

The centre currently has just over 200 members since its inception 30 years ago and they have hosted a fete every year.

“We hope that the centre can continue to offer the services it does because it’s so important, our elderly cannot afford to go to private practitioners. They become very lonely, and many of their children move overseas. Coming here gives them a sense of belonging, many of them are volunteers as well. We have about 40-60 elderly volunteers. Even one lady at 89 years old, she’s still making pancakes. So it’s their centre, they work for it and they enjoy it,” Nel says.
