AfriForum youth beautifies Battle of Bronkhorstspruit monuments

The monuments were neglected and left in a terrible state for years before the branch decided to clean the monuments and get the youth involved in the country's and town's history.

The youth wing of the AfriForum Bronkhorstspruit branch recently rolled up their sleeves and did much-needed repairs to the Battle of Bronkhorstspruit monuments.

There are two monuments on the R25: one commemorates the Boers and the other the British soldiers who died during the Battle of Bronkhorstspruit on December 20, 1880.

According to the organisation, the monuments were neglected and in a terrible state for years before it decided to clean them and get the youth involved in the country’s and town’s history.

This year the British monument was repainted and weeds that had grown over the fence removed at both monuments.

This AfriForum branch also used five tons of gravel to level the monuments.

The plaques were also peeled off and illegible so they were repaired so that visitors could continue to learn more about this piece of history.

After all the hard work, two youth members laid down wreaths donated by the local FAK Culture Network.

Magda Lewis, chairperson of the Bronkhorstspruit branch, said they chose these monuments because they are close to the heart of the community of Bronkhorstspruit and are part of their history.

“It’s nice to see how the youth also jumped in and took ownership of their town and heritage,” said Lewis.

“To celebrate all the hard work, after the proceedings, all those involved celebrated our Afrikaner heritage by barbecuing and enjoying cookies, milk tarts and ginger beer.”

Llewellynn Hemmens, AfriForum district co-ordinator for Greater Pretoria North, said this initiative is just one of the many AfriForum is undertaking in Bronkhorstspruit to build a town that all members of the community can be proud of.
