Two Mams extortion suspects to appear in court

The suspects will appear in court on October 3, facing charges of grievous bodily harm and extortion.

Police apprehended two people in Mamelodi East this week on suspicion of extorting money from locals.

The suspects, between the ages of 33 and 46, were arrested on October 1 and will appear in court on October 3 to answer to charges of assault and extortion.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi: “It is reported that the suspects were wanted for an assault case opened in September whereby they assaulted the victim with sjamboks after failing to pay the protection fee.”

She said during the arrest, the two were found in possession of two register files and an undisclosed amount of money.

Nevhuhulwi encouraged locals who have been victims of extortion to report to their nearest police station.

“Those who have fallen victim to these extortion crimes are urged to come forth to open cases,” said Nevhuhulwi.

“The police, with the assistance of crime intelligence information, will continue to conduct these operations with the aim of addressing extortion activities at affected areas in the Tshwane district.”
