Here’s a reminder that if you’re an older person, you can collect your SASSA disability grant today. SASSA provides financial assistance to approximately 29 million people across South Africa, including 4 million old-age pensioners, 13 million childcare beneficiaries, 10 million Social Relief of Distress (SRD) recipients, and around 2 million disability and war veterans.
For October 2024, grant collection dates are as follows:
- Older Persons Grants: Wednesday, October 2, 2024
- Disability Grants: Thursday, October 3, 2024
- Children’s Grants: Friday, October 4, 2024
Beneficiaries can collect their payments from retailers such as Pick n Pay, Boxer, USave, Checkers, and Shoprite, using their SASSA card, CashSend, or via direct bank transfers. The first week of each month is designated for elderly, child, and disability grants, followed by payments for SRD and other grant recipients. SRD recipients, however, are unable to collect at Post Office branches, while other beneficiaries can continue to do so.
Earlier this year, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced an increase in permanent SASSA grants, which are adjusted to keep up with inflation. This includes a R100 increase for old-age, war veterans, disability, and care dependency grants (R90 in April and R10 in October), a R50 increase to foster care grants, and a R20 increase for child support grants. Additionally, the SRD grant rose by R20 or 5.7% from April 1.

Meanwhile, Postbank has started replacing SASSA gold cards with new black cards in Gauteng, available at 21 Pick ‘n Pay and Boxer stores in areas such as Soweto, Tembisa, Orange Farm, Benoni, and Pretoria CBD. The process is free and doesn’t affect grant payments. To get a black card, beneficiaries need to bring a valid or temporary ID, and those collecting on behalf of others must provide their ID and a SASSA proxy letter.
Asylum seekers collecting grants should bring their official approval letter from SASSA.
