East reservoirs show improvement after repairs

Repairs by technicians bring a ray of hope following power trips that affected the Mapleton Pumping Station.

Despite reservoirs showing improvement on October 1 after running low due to the Mapleton Booster Pumping Station being disabled by power trips over the weekend, parts of the east continue to experience water outages, according to the Tshwane metro.

Water has trickled back into several affected parts in the east of Pretoria.

Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said on October 1 the water utility Rand Water had informed the metro that the repairs by Eskom technicians at the Mapleton Booster Pumping Station were completed last night (September 30).

The Bronberg water system inlet was opened.

Mashigo said the restoration of the power supply to this station provided a glimmer of hope to the affected areas.

He said furthermore, this will contribute immensely to reservoirs that benefit directly from the Bronberg water system.

“A series of power trips compromised the water provision to some communities that experienced reduced water supply or lack of water.”

Mashigo said the latest update puts the pumping load of the water system at 100%.

“Upon observing and checking the levels of some reservoirs impacted by the Mapleton power failure, an improvement could be detected this morning.”

Mashigo said over and above the repairs by the technicians involved, a discernible upswing in the water storage capacity can be attributed to lower demand overnight.

Some of the city’s reservoirs have improved overnight, however, the following areas were affected by the water outage:

– Parts of Mamelodi

– Tyger Valley

– Doornkloof Agricultural Holdings

– Mooikloof Ridge

– Six Fountains

– Shere

– Hazeldean

He added that water tankers will remain in place to deliver water to affected consumers.
