Water tankers provide water relief to east residents

Mapleton station is pumping at 80% while further investigations are underway to determine the root cause of the low power supply.

The Tshwane metro has strategically placed water tankers to provide parts of Pretoria east with water after several areas had been plunged into a sudden water outage.

At this stage, water has been restored to some areas in the east but the estimated time for others to receive water is unknown.

The water outage was caused by the power trip at Rand Water’s Mapleton Booster Pumping Station located in Ekurhuleni as reported on Saturday, September 28.

Ward 91 councillor, Henning Viljoen said relief has been provided to residents through supplying water tankers.

Viljoen said the full restoration time is unknown.

He said the Mapleton system has been partially restored.

“Efforts to pump at full capacity were interrupted by a power trip again. Pumping resumed at 630 ML at 22:00, last night with this supply being shared between the City of Tshwane and the City of Ekurhuleni,” Viljoen said.

He said the Bronberg supply has been temporarily shut down to allow for the replenishment of the main reservoirs.

“Bulk is currently awaiting confirmation on the portion of the 630 ML allocated to the Tshwane metro.”

The water utility Rand Water confirmed that the Mapleton station is pumping at 80% while further investigations are underway to determine the root cause of the low power supply.

Rand Water said it will provide continuous updates on the matter.

Makenosi Maroo, Rand Water spokesperson said on Saturday, at 13:30, Rand Water’s Mapleton Booster Station experienced a complete power failure.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the city arranged for water tankers to supply water to the affected parts.

He said these areas are Mamelodi, Tyger Valley, Doornkloof Agricultural Holdings, Mooikloof Ridge, Six Fountains, Shere and Hazeldean.

The metro said water tankers had also been positioned in the following areas:

– Bordeaux Street, Garsfontein at the Great Dane Park.

– Hoërskool Garsfontein drop-off Rolina Street

– Isie Smuts Street, corner of Keeshond or Nesser streets

– Woodhill Golf estate drop-off
