Babelegi announced as number 1 to receive water supply following infrastructure developments

MMC for Utilities and Regional Operations and Coordination, Themba Fosi says oversight visits to the Rooiwal and Klipdrift sites have shown that substantial work is ongoing, facilitated by a service provider appointed by Magalies Water.

Residents in the Babelegi region in the north of Pretoria will be the first group to benefit from the Rooiwal and Klipdrift Waste Water Treatment Works projects aimed at resolving the water supply challenges in Hammanskraal.

According to MMC for Utilities and Regional Operations and Coordination, Themba Fosi, those in the region will be the first to benefit from the initiative, with the completion of Module 1 by the end of next month, which will supply 12.5ml per day to Babelegi Reservoir.

“This will serve areas including Mandela Village, Marokolong, Ramotse, Kekana Gardens and Babelegi Industrial (wards 49, 74, 74, and 75),” said Fosi.

He said subsequent modules will include the following:

– Module 2 (February 2025) will add another 12.5ml per day, benefitting Majaneng, Kudube units 1, 2, 3, 6, and 10, and other areas (wards 8, 49, 74, 75 and 76).

– Module 3 (April 2025) will bring the total capacity to 12.5ml per day, serving Hammanskraal West and extensions, Kudube Unit 4 and other areas (wards 8, 49 and 73).

– Module 4 (June 2025) will finalise the project, delivering 12.5 ml per day to Temba reservoir, covering Sekampaneng, Kudube units 5, 7 and 11, and other areas (wards 8, 75 and 76).

“The oversight visits to the Rooiwal and Klipdrift sites highlighted that substantial work is ongoing, facilitated by a highly credible service provider appointed by Magalies Water.

“The metro has made strides towards addressing the long-standing issue of water provision in Hammanskraal.”

Fosi said this effort would also reduce the city’s reliance on costly water tankers.

“The City of Tshwane, together with its water and sanitation department and Magalies Water, assures residents that all efforts are being made to protect the progress of this project and to ensure a reliable water supply starting from the end of October.

“These projects are crucial milestones in securing a reliable and sustainable water supply for Tshwane.

“We appreciate the community’s patience and support as we continue to enhance infrastructure.”

The metro also announced that the refurbishment and upgrade of the Klipgat Waste Water Treatment Works is progressing well and is expected to be completed on September 30.

The infrastructure has been beset with serious problems such as vandalism and theft of equipment since 2015.

The metro appropriated a budget of more than R280-million to upgrade the facility and make it environmentally friendly, stop the sewage spillage and install modern security equipment to protect it from potential crime.

City Manager Johann Mettler urged the community of Klipgat to join hands with the municipality to protect the facility.

“The community of Klipgat should help us to protect this multi-million rand facility which has been refurbished and upgraded for their benefit.

“We endeavoured to address all the problems we had experienced previously, and soon the site will be ready to provide essential service to residents,” said Mettler.

The metro has mitigated the risk of theft and vandalism with the installation of an appropriate security system to protect the site.

Access control, monitoring and armed response were assessed by the metro’s asset protection unit and will be implemented as of October 1.
