Centurion author educates South Africans on veteran actor

The book digs into Boikie Pholo's life, and career and for his roles in Soul Buddyz, The Throne and Ga Re Dumele.

A Centurion author hopes to use his new book to inspire young and upcoming South African actors.

Joseph Masilo (44) has authored the book I AM MODITLE PHOLO: Behind the Scenes with Raitlhwana.

Masilo said the book digs into Boikie Pholo’s life, and career and his roles in Ga Re Dumele, Soul Buddyz, The Throne and other shows.

“I grew up in an environment where stories were told… you know, my grandmother and my aunties used to tell us stories.

“My love for stories developed then because I was always interested in what we were told and how the stories were portrayed,” said Masilo.

Masilo mentioned that the journey of storytelling hasn’t been a smooth one as it requires more hard work.

“When experiencing writer’s block, I remove myself from the story and take a breather so that you can regroup yourself and continue writing.”

Masilo, originally from Thlabane in Rustenburg, North West said most of his stories are rooted in the concept of humble beginnings.

“Look, everyone has to start somewhere in life and the journey to success requires a lot of hard work and my stories come from that mentality of saying people should never give up regardless of the challenges they encounter in life,” he said.

He envisioned the biography as a celebration of Pholo’s life, which gives deeper insight into his background and performances.

“The book was born of Patrick Shai’s death and I worked through it for three years.

“I was looking at veteran actors of this country who are no longer considered useful in the industry, they are no longer given the chance to continue doing their work,” said Masilo.

He said veteran actors must be recognised and acknowledged so that the younger generation can learn from them.

“Research is very essential in storytelling, you must be confident with your craft because no one will take that away from you.

“I enjoy exercising, and watching a lot of sport when I’m not writing.”

Masilo said Pholo must be given his flowers while he is still alive.

“Those who grew up watching him will see the reason why he must be celebrated.

“The impact he has had on the entertainment industry is huge because his characters in some of the shows that were produced are still living among us.”
