The Moot community joined hands with emergency services on Friday evening to fight what residents describe as “the largest fire in the Magaliesberg area in 30 years”.
The fire, believed to have started late afternoon, swept over the mountain on Friday evening endangering property homes in Waverley.
Firefighters battled the blaze until 04:30 on Saturday morning.
Tshwane emergency services spokesperson, Lindsay Mnguni, said that Innersdale Fire Station attended to the scene, together with the district commander from the Central Fire Station.
Various local emergency and security organisations also assisted.
Susan Andrews, Villieria CPF executive chairperson, confirmed that there were no injuries and no properties were damaged, thanks to the community members and emergency workers who attended the fire.
She said that Tshwane firefighters, Villieria SAPS, ADT Fidelity fire services, KPS, and CPF members from Villieria and Capital Park joined about 100 community members from all over the Moot.
Andrews thanked Villieria CPF deputy chairperson, Alewyn Landman, who coordinated the volunteers and the community who contributed.
She also thanked Ancelize van der Kooi from Kilner Park Security who rallied support from the community.
“Many people brought water, cold drinks, energy bars, and equipment to help fight in the mountain,” she said.
Ward councillor, Elma Nel, also praised emergency services and the community for their swift response and co-operation.
“Without the assistance of all the teams, damage would have been a hundred times worse.
I sincerely appreciate all the role-players keeping our community safe.”
