Noweto stations indicate a decrease in contact crimes

Contact crimes include crimes committed against people including rape, assault and robbery.

Police stations in Noweto have shown increases in contact crimes in the latest quarterly crime stats released by police minister Senzo Mchunu for the 2024/25 financial year.

The statistics indicate the number of crimes reported to the country’s 1 163 police stations from April to June.

Contact crimes, which include offences like murder, sexual assault, and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, saw notable shifts in the far north.

Ga-Rankuwa

Contact crimes (crimes against people) saw a decrease of 2.3% this quarter.

Murder counts decreased by two, with eight cases being reported and sexual offences increased by one count as 21 cases were reported.

A total of 79 cases of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) were reported and common assault cases decreased by 17% (from 112 to 93).

Common robberies increased by six counts up to 27 cases reported this quarter and robberies with aggravating circumstances increased by 12.6% (95 cases up to 107).

No rape cases were reported, but two more cases of sexual offences were reported.

Carjackings decreased by several counts from 25 cases down to 14 and 29 robberies at residential premises took place, while 13 robberies at non-residential premises were recorded.

Malicious damage to property cases increased by 28.3% (46 up to 59).

Twenty-two cases of burglary at non-residential premises were recorded and there was a decrease of 6.7% at residential premises with 56 cases.

Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases decreased by five counts.

Police detected five counts of illegal firearm and ammunition compared to the three they did in the last quarter.

Mabopane

Mabopane police station reported an increase of 9.2% in contact crimes.

Robberies with aggravating circumstances decreased by 28.2% (103 up to 132 cases) and common assault cases decreased by 19.7% (147 down to 118).

Assault with intent to cause GBH cases rose by 37.3% (51 to 70) and rape cases decreased by three counts up to 12 reported.

Four more counts of sexual assault were recorded in this quarter, bringing the total to five.

Carjackings decreased by six counts to 23 cases and robberies at non-residential premises increased by 11 counts up to 16 cases.

Robberies at non-residential premises increased by 16 counts up to 31.

Two counts of arson were reported and 43 malicious damage to property cases, a seven-count decrease from last year.

Burglary at non-residential premises increased by a single count of up to 13 cases and at a residential place increased by 16.9% (65 up to 76).

Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases increased by six counts to eight, and theft out of vehicles increased by 11 counts up to 40.

Detected illegal firearm and ammunition possession crimes decreased by two counts from 16 and 10 fewer counts of driving under the influence (DUI) were recorded from the 25 in the last quarter.

Soshanguve

The Soshanguve SAPS also reported a decrease in contact crimes of 13.2% with attempted murder cases increasing by two counts up to 14 cases reported.

Assault with intent to cause GBH increased by 26.6% (64 cases up to 81) and cases of common assault decreased by 21.4% (168 to 132). Common robberies decreased by 15 counts (now 23) and murder cases decreased by 5 counts (now 9) while sexual offences increased by six (now 26).

Cases of robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased by 20.8%, from 144 cases down to 114.

Eight more rape cases (now 23) were reported this quarter.

Carjackings decreased by 18 counts, down to 15 cases reported and robberies at residential premises increased by eight counts to 26 cases reported.

Theft of a motor vehicle or motorcycle decreased by three counts for a total of seven cases reported.

Detected drug-related crimes decreased by 4% (75 to 72) and detected DUIs decreased by 16 counts.
