The first quarter crime statistics released by the police minister on August 30 place Mamelodi East at number 12 among the top 30 police stations nationwide for the most reported sexual offences.
Minister Senzo Mchunu announced the country’s crime numbers for the first quarter of 2024, from April to June.
Sexual offences cases reported to Mamelodi East police increased by 13 this quarter, but were reduced by seven for Mamelodi West police.
Rape crimes in Mamelodi East remain a serious concern, as the number of reported cases reported increased by 11, but there was a decrease by four in the number reported to Mamelodi West police.
Trio crimes (carjackings, house robberies and business robberies) increased by 42.3% from 71 to 101, while contact-related crimes decreased by 5.4%, and property-related crimes decreased by 27.1%, while car hijackings increased by 10.
Crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 5.7% while community-reported serious crimes decreased by 10%.
In Mamelodi West, car hijacking cases increased from 17 to 24 counts, contact-related crimes decreased by nice, and property-related crimes showed a sharp 16.2% decrease.
An alarming 25% increase in robberies at residential premises and commercial crimes was reported for Mamelodi East.
There was a marked decrease in community reported serious crimes of 20.5%, but crimes detected as a result of police action increased slightly by 2.4%.
Mchunu issued a warning about violence against police.
“Police are the only ones with the mandate to protect us and to fight crime,” he said.
“When you shoot at police while they are doing their work, you are challenging the state.
“Therefore, there will be consequences against the people who are shooting at police.”
He said to build a safer community, combatting crime requires a holistic approach in collaboration with sister departments such as social development, justice, correctional services, and basic education.
