Reports of contact crimes drop at north stations
A decrease of 21.3% in contact crimes has been reported at the Pretoria North police station.
Police stations in the north of Pretoria have shown decreases in contact crimes in the latest quarterly crime stats released by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu for the 2024/25 financial year on August 30.
The statistics indicate the number of crimes reported to the country’s 1 163 police stations from April to June.
Contact crimes, which include offences like murder, sexual assault, and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), saw notable shifts in the far north.
Pretoria North
A decrease of 21.3% has been reported in contact crimes.
Robberies with aggravating circumstances decreased by 13% (from 69 to 60 cases) and assault cases decreased by nine counts (56 down to 47).
Assault with intent to cause GBH cases rose by four counts (23 to 27) and rape cases decreased by four counts up to three reported.
One count of sexual assault was recorded, compared to the seven reported in the previous quarter.
Carjackings increased by four counts to 15 cases and robberies at non-residential premises decreased by four counts up to six cases.
Robberies at residential premises decreased by six counts up to 16.
No cases of arson were reported and with malicious damage to property cases, 43 were reported, a 12-count decrease from last year.
Burglary at non-residential premises decreased by 14 counts of up to eight cases and at residential properties, decreased by 20.9% (67 to 53).
Motor vehicle and motorcycle theft cases decreased by 35.3%, and theft out of vehicles decreased by 6.6% with 57 cases reported.
Detected illegal firearm and ammunition possession crimes decreased by one count from three and 12 more counts of driving under the influence (DUI) were recorded from the 23 in the last quarter.
Akasia
The Akasia SAPS reported a 7.5% decrease in contact crimes, with no attempted murder cases reported.
Assault with intent to cause GBH increased by 20.4% (93 cases up to 112) and cases of common assault decreased by 3% (169 to 164). Common robberies decreased by one count (now 33) and murder cases increased by 13 counts (now 21) while sexual offences decreased by five (now 25).
Cases of robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased by 27.7%, from 235 cases down to 170.
This quarter, 22 rapes were reported.
Carjackings decreased by 24 counts, down to 28 reported cases and robberies at non-residential premises decreased by three counts to 15 cases.
Motor vehicle or motorcycle theft cases increased by 14.3% to a total of 72 cases reported.
Detected drug-related crimes increased by two counts (47 to 49) and cases of DUI increased by 18 counts.
Sinoville
Contact crimes (crimes against people) saw a decrease of 9.7% this quarter.
Murder counts decreased by one, with zero cases being reported and sexual offences decreased by three counts as six cases were reported.
A total of 11 cases of assault GBH cases were reported and common assault cases decreased by 13.1% (from 61 to 53).
Common robberies decreased by seven counts, with 11 cases reported this quarter and robberies with aggravating circumstances increased by one count.
Two rape cases were reported and two cases of sexual offences were reported.
Carjackings decreased by one count from two cases down to one and eight robberies at residential premises took place, while eight robberies at non-residential premises were recorded.
Malicious damage to property cases increased by five counts (from 28 to 23).
A total of 17 cases of burglary at non-residential premises were recorded and there was a decrease of 9.8% at residential premises with 56 cases.
Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases decreased by 24.8%.
Police detected two cases of illegal firearms and ammunition, compared to the three of the last quarter.
