Newly launched TMPD Task Team arrests four suspects in Soshanguve

Jukulyn has been identified as a crime hotspot in Soshanguve.

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) has introduced a specialised task team dedicated to tackling crime in the hotspots in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria.

The newly formed unit made a breakthrough in their inaugural operation in the Jukulyn area of Soshanguve where they arrested four suspects.

TMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Issac Mahamba said the task team, which was established to target high-crime areas, was on routine patrol when they encountered a suspicious Volkswagen Polo and three men and a woman.

Mahamba said the four searched and nothing incriminating was found.

“Upon inspecting the car, the team uncovered a 9mm firearm with ammunition. Notably, the firearm’s serial number had been deliberately removed.”

Mahamba said in the absence of any legitimate explanation for the possession of the firearm, all four individuals were arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“The TMPD will continue to fight the scourge of crime in Tshwane. No stone will be left unturned.

“Operations aimed at eliminating the elements of crime are conducted in all areas of Tshwane.”

Previously, deputy police minister Cassel Mathale addressed Jukulyn residents on the growing scourge of e-commerce and street robberies in the area.

Mathale met the residents in the Block X community hall accompanied by senior police officials as part of a ministerial community imbizo.

The imbizo was attended by several government authorities and aimed to help residents find lasting solutions to crime in the area.

Tshwane district commissioner Brigadier Samuel Thine told the residents about what his and the provincial offices were doing to fight crime in the community.

MEC for community safety Faith Mazibuko also launched an e-panic button project to fight crime in the area.
