Tshwane metro is preparing to provide Hammanskraal residents in the north of Pretoria with clean, potable piped water from next month, however the supply will be broken into four phases.
Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the metro audited water meters in the area to measure the amount of water used by households so that the metro could calculate reliable water bills for residents.
The audit was done to streamline the process of providing potable piped water.
Mashigo said the audit revealed that out of the 37 000 meters checked in the area, 23 000 were in working order making 14 000 meters faulty.
“The metro is currently replacing the faulty meters, and this exercise will have no cost implications for those customers with such meters.
“The much-anticipated provision of water through taps is expected to be realised at the end of next month,” said Mashigo.
According to Mashigo, the metro has adopted a phased approach for the area’s water provision, which was informed by the planning, design, and construction of the infrastructure.
“As part of this phased approach, the area closer to the water distribution storage point will be the first to receive supply.”
The four phases will be implemented as follows:
– The first phase will receive water from October
– Second phase from February 2025
– Third phase from April 2025
– Fourth phase from June 2025
He said another worthy note is the scouring of the network by the water distribution team based in Region 2.
“This is an ongoing function that enables the removal of sediments in the pipelines and for the maintenance teams to effect any repair work that is needed.
“The team continue to be deployed to attend to possible issues of leaks and broader upkeep duties that call for immediacy,” he said.
Mashigo mentioned that the indigent registration roadshow will be held at Makgoba Sebothoma Hall, Darling Street, Unit D, Kudube in Hammanskraal on September 10 and 11.
Mashigo urged those who need information about the indigent programme to visit the Temba Urban Council Office and Mandela Office.
The metro recently held a water supply public outreach meeting to ensure reliable water supply.
The outreach meeting was held in anticipation of the roll-out of water from the Klipdrift Water Treatment Plant when the first phase of the plant expansion comes online next month.
The metro ensured that residents were able to interact with representatives from the indigent services offered by the Community and Social Development Services Department.
