When will the September school holidays start?

Learners across South Africa are eagerly counting down the days until the much-anticipated September holiday break.

With the end of the school term in sight, find out when the holiday officially begins and how long learners will have to relax before hitting the books again!

There is no longer a difference between inland and coastal schools breaking up and returning to school, as was previously the case.

It’s important to note that inland provinces, including the Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West, and coastal provinces, such as the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape, no longer have a difference in their school term schedules.

The Department of Basic Education’s 2024 school calendar reveals an important update. This year, learners will be embarking on a 203-day academic journey across four terms, which is four more days than the previous year, providing more opportunities for learning and growth.

Here are the dates for the terms:

• Term 1: 17 January to 20 March (46 days)
• Term 2: 3 April to 14 June (52 days)
• Term 3: 9 July to 20 September (53 days)
• Term 4: 1 October to 11 December (52 days)

The September holidays will kick off after the third term, which runs from 9 July to 20 September, spanning 53 school days and marking the longest term of the year.

After a well-deserved three-week break, learners across South Africa will return to school refreshed and ready.
