Soshanguve Power Line Project to eradicate electricity issues

The project forms a critical part of the metro’s short-term bulk electricity strengthening programme to address frequent power supply interruptions in the Soshanguve area

The Soshanguve JJ 132kV power line is set to strengthen the electricity supply to communities and deal with overloading on the grid.

The metro hosted a sod-turning ceremony to mark the official handover of the Soshanguve JJ 132kV Overhead Power Line Project on Friday, September 6.

The event was attended by key stakeholders, local community leaders and city officials, including Mayor Cilliers Brink.

MMC for Utilities and Regional Operations Themba Fosi said this project forms a critical part of the metro’s short-term bulk electricity strengthening programme to address frequent power supply interruptions in the Soshanguve area.

“The project, which entails the construction of a 10km double-circuit overhead power line from the new JJ Substation to the existing 132kV grid, will ensure a more stable and reliable electricity supply to key areas within Soshanguve,” Fosi said.

He said upon completion, 50% of the load from the IA Substation will be transferred to the JJ Substation, benefiting areas such as Block GG, JJ, NN and LL.

“This will enhance the city’s ability to perform necessary maintenance and refurbishment at IA Substation without major disruptions.”

Fosi stated that the project will create much-needed job opportunities via the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

“Local small, medium and micro enterprises will be directly involved in providing essential services, such as site security, ablution facilities, rubble removal and plant hire services.”

Additionally, the contractor will employ two community liaison officers and at least 10 local labourers, ensuring that the community actively participates in this transformational initiative.

“We believe that the Soshanguve JJ 132kV Overhead Power Line Project will not only mitigate the persistent power interruptions in the area but will also set a new standard for energy infrastructure projects in Tshwane.

“This is an exciting time for Tshwane as we lay the groundwork for a brighter, more empowered future for all our residents.

We are committed to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure the successful completion of this project, which will significantly improve the stability of the electricity supply for the Soshanguve community,” Fosi said.
