Over 300 Shanela arrests made in Sunnyside

Among the arrested suspects were 78 arrested for GBV offences.

Authorities arrested 333 suspects during a recent Operation Shanela carried out in the Sunnyside policing precinct.

The operation, led by Major-General Samuel Thine, District Commissioner of Tshwane, included a series of high-density patrols at crime hotspots, inspections of liquor outlets and second-hand goods dealers, and targeted searches of premises.

Tshwane’s detective teams traced and arrested 292 suspects.

These included 78 for gender-based violence (GBV) crimes, 15 for murder, five for attempted murder, seven for armed robbery, and two for rape.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan Van Dyk said 44 illegal immigrants were arrested and would remain in detention pending legal processes, after which they would be deported.

“Furthermore, three individuals were fined for employing illegal immigrants.”

Police targeted 802 individuals, 389 vehicles, and eight premises, while 20 vehicles were tested to verify that they were not stolen and eight liquor premises were inspected.

This led to the closure of one establishment for non-compliance, and alcohol was confiscated.

A second-hand goods dealer was also inspected and found to be in violation of the Second-Hand Goods Act, resulting in a fine being issued.

“One individual was arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes, with 40 packets and 24 boxes of illicit cigarettes seized. Another suspect was arrested for drug dealing when 44.47g of dagga and R50 in cash were found in their possession. An additional charge of bribery was added when the suspect attempted to bribe the arresting officer,” said Van Dyk.

Eleven suspects were charged under the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) Act for non-compliance and 151 traffic violation notices were issued, totalling R68 880 in fines.
