Central police vow to beef up patrols

According to the latest crime statistics, Pretoria Central Police Station once more features among the top 30 stations plagued by serious crimes nationally.

Pretoria Central police have vowed to step up their crime prevention efforts in key areas.

This follows the station once again featuring among the top 30 stations nationally plagued by serious crimes according to the latest released crime statistics.

The strategy was announced during a meeting on August 29 at the SARS offices located on Lilian Ngoyi Street with security companies, fellow law enforcement agencies and government departments operating in the inner city.

The purpose of the meeting was to dissect the issues relating to by-law enforcement, second-hand goods dealers, abandoned buildings, and other crime-related issues.

“As mandated by the Constitution and orders from the high office, all the stakeholders should join forces to address crime and come up with strategies of how best they can assist each other,” said spokesperson, Constable Thabang Nkhumise.

“This engagement was also a plenary meeting for future joint operations that will be taking place heading into the festive seasons.

“Other companies will be incorporated to ensure the partnership grows from strength to strength, and more outreach programmes along with awareness campaigns will be conducted to sensitise the community about new crime patterns,” Nkhumise said

During his address, station commander Brigadier Hlengani Gibin Mashaba asserted the station’s commitment to ensuring fruitful collaborations remains integral in its fight to decrease crime.

“We will continue to deploy more officers in all the corners of the city and foot patrols will remain mandatory to police the city. Other areas such as Eeufees, Thaba Tshwane, Salvokop, and the Voortrekker Monument will be closely monitored.

“A crime analysis was done and the station has seen a slight decrease in the number of crimes such as contact crimes, and property-related crimes will be tackled,” Mashaba.

On the same day, Central police arrested a 26-year-old man in possession of an illegal firearm.
Patrol officers spotted a suspicious man on the corner of Lillian Ngoyi and Bloed Street at 15:00.

After a search of his belongings, officers recovered a pistol with the serial number scratched off and several rounds of ammunition.

Not being able to provide a licence for the firearm, the suspect was taken into custody.
