Moot stations grapple with crime stats

It was a mixed bag for four Moot police stations, with some trends revealed in the first quarter crime stats.

While some areas of Pretoria show worsening crime trends, four police stations in the Moot present a mixed bag of statistics.

This data was revealed following Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s release of the first quarter crime statistics for 2024/25 on Friday, August 30.

The statistics released include data from all 1 163 stations across the country over the past five years for the period from April to June this year.

Some areas of the city, such as Pretoria Central, showed minor improvements, but hotspots like Brooklyn and Sunnyside are seeing worsening trends.

Tshwane stations Temba, Mamelodi East, Brooklyn, Pretoria Central, Akasia and Sunnyside made the top 30 police stations plagued by serious crime nationally.

The statistics also revealed crime trends in the Tshwane district, including a 23.4% rise in kidnapping cases, with 401 cases reported across Tshwane in the three-month period.

Pretoria Moot station showed an increase in contact crime numbers.

The station reported a 22.6% increase in contact crimes, with the largest increase seen in sexual offences.

There was also an increase in rape cases opened, recording five in the three months.

The main contact crimes reported were recorded as common assault cases.

Robbery at residential and non-residential premises increased, and burglary at non-residential premises increased, however, home burglaries saw a dip compared to the same period last year.

The community reported 16.8% more crimes this year, while the station reported 50 more cases of theft and 12 more cases of commercial crimes.

Villieria showed more favourable statistics, with an almost 30% decrease in contact crimes.

The most common contact crime was robbery with aggravating circumstances, with 35 cases reported, eight fewer than last year.

Despite this, burglaries increased by 77.5%, with 71 cases reported compared to 41 last year.

Villieria police showed a slightly more than 50% increase in crimes detected as a result of police action, especially in drug-related crimes.

Eersterust SAPS reported the lowest contact crimes in the last four years for the period from April to June.

Contact crimes dropped by 14.3% with common assault the most common contact crime.

While burglary and robberies were down, the station reported an 8.6% increase in other serious crimes, including shoplifting, commercial crimes, and other types of theft.

The community reported 15% fewer crimes, while crimes detected by police action increased, especially in drug-related crimes.

Wonderboompoort was one of the better-performing Moot stations, according to the statistics.

This year saw a third fewer contact crimes, 23.5% fewer community-reported crimes, and the lowest theft of motor vehicles and motorbikes in the last four years.
