Hot Mams DJ shares rise to fame

DJ Dhino is currently working on a EP with Kabza de Small which will drop in November.

Amapiano DJ and producer; Tiego Samuel Motau popularly known as Dj Dihno (37), hailing from Mamelodi, in the east of Pretoria has been pushing boundaries for over a decade.

Dj Dihno was born and bred in Mamelodi west section D3, where he is popularly known for his music and hosting “Dihno Cafe” events in Moretela Park.

His journey in the music industry began 12 years ago and he has since become a well-known amapiano artist and DJ.

Apart from his music, the DJ has a degree in civil engineering from Tshwane North College (TNC).

Influenced by his grandfather’s music collection, DJ Dihno’s passion for music started when he was 16.

He began his music career performing at weddings and birthday parties after his mother bought him a sound system.

He later improved his skills at Multi-Racial DJ School in Hatfield, where he studied music production.

“I took a three-month DJing course to elevate my skills and learn about different aspects of music,” he said.

Motau said the name “Dihno” is a play on the name of his favourite Brazilian soccer player, Ronaldinho Gaucho.

His big break came when he landed a gig at Jack Budha Pub, and he has since performed at numerous events, including the Corona Amapiano Sunset experience.

He has worked with top DJs, including DBN Gogo and Kabelo Mothatha popularly known as Kabza de Small.

Dihno added that an EP he dropped with DBN Gogo during the lockdown earned him international recognition.

“My biggest highlight was being nominated for best newcomer artist by MTV,” said DJ Dihno.

He said he is not only committed to his music, but also to giving back to his community through his foundation,

Dinho Cafe Foundation provides sanitary supplies, hosts motivational talks, soccer tournaments, and donates food parcels to those in need.

“I am working with eNtokozweni Resource Centre to donate food parcels quarterly,” he said.

“I also host the One Man Show events, where attendees gain entry by donating sanitary pads which are later donated to local schools.”

Motau said one of the schools they donated sanitary pads to is Vukani High school in Mamelodi West.

He believes he stays relevant by working with other DJs and artists.

He advises young and upcoming DJs to stay humble, even at their peak.

DJ Dihno is currently working on a new EP with DJ Kabza de Small, which set to drop in November.

“My people should also look foward to the 2024 Dihno cafe event on December 26,” said the DJ.
