Parts of Pretoria to regain power by late afternoon, says metro

Seven substations were affected by a failure at a primary substation, leaving large parts of Pretoria east and the Moot without power. The metro says the power is expected to be back on by 18:00 today.

Large parts of Pretoria were left without power after a failure at the Scientia Primary Substation impacted the supply at seven other substations.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the power was expected to be restored by 18:00 on Friday.

“The City of Tshwane is aware of an extended power supply interruption due to failure of high voltage gas-insulated switchgear at Scientia Primary Substation.”

He said seven substations and the surrounding areas were affected, including Lynnwood, The Willows, Villieria, Koedoespoort, Waltloo 1, Pyramid, and Pumulani.

The gas-insulated switchgear ensures the safe operation of the circuit breaker.

He said the metro’s technicians were repairing compressors at the site.

“Electricity supply to the affected areas is expected to be restored this afternoon around 18:00, provided there are no further challenges.”

He said the team was also exploring options to back some of the affected areas through the Pyramid line in the hope of restoring power to some areas before 18:00.

“The City of Tshwane appreciates your patience and understanding as we work to restore power.

“We are committed to maintaining the reliability of our services and will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
