Planned hospital in Soshanguve to bridge healthcare gap – Health department

According to the Department of Health spokesperson, Motalatala Modiba, the department is still identifying land where the hospital will be built.

This is to address the growing demand for healthcare services and to meet the needs of the rapidly growing population in the north of Pretoria.

According to Department of Health spokesperson Motalatala Modiba, the plans entail the provincial government upgrading the existing facilities, or building a new one in Soshanguve.

Modiba said according to Stats SA’s latest mid-year population estimates, Gauteng is home to nearly 16 million residents, putting a strain on the healthcare system.

“To address this, the government has committed to accelerating infrastructure development in the seventh administration, with a focus on healthcare,” said Modiba.

He added that the planned Soshanguve hospital is still in its infancy, with various land portions identified. They are however awaiting confirmation of their suitability.

Modiba said the Department of Health is working closely with the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development to expedite this process.

“The health department is aiming to finalise land identification by the end of the financial year.”

While details around the project are scarce at this stage, Modiba has emphasised the department’s commitment to expanding healthcare infrastructure in the province.

“The planned hospitals will bridge the healthcare gap in township areas and address regional disparities in healthcare provision,” said Modiba.

He added that the project will bring the province closer to achieving its vision of a universal healthcare system.
