Look: Parts of SA blanketed in snow as Pretoria faces cold front chill

Two cold fronts will impact Pretoria later this week, bringing much cooler weather.

According to VoxWeather forecaster Michelle Cordier, temperatures in Gauteng will drop on Thursday, with highs in the low 20s and lows between 10°C and 15°C.

“The weather will be mostly cloudy, and there could be some light rain.”

This is because significant snowfall is expected in parts of South Africa this week.

Heavy snowfall was confirmed in several parts of the country by Wednesday, including snow on Table Mountain.

By Friday, Gauteng will experience even colder conditions, with temperatures below 20°C and lows dipping below 10°C.

“The cold, cloudy, and rainy weather will persist throughout the day. While snow is expected in other regions, Gauteng will mainly see chilly, wet conditions. The temperatures are expected to warm up again by Sunday.”

She said two cold fronts and a ridging high-pressure system will bring cold, wet, and windy weather to the south-west this week and also drop freezing levels low enough for widespread snow from Tuesday evening.

“Both the GFS (Global Forecast System) and the ECMWF (European weather model) are showing significant snowfall from Tuesday evening over the mountain peaks in the Western Cape (Matroosberg Nature Reserve, Cederberg, and Swartberg mountain range_ and Northern Cape (Nuweland and Roggeveld mountain) including the town of Sutherland. ”

Meanwhile, a light dusting of snow is also possible over the Hottentots Holland Mountains and Boland Mountains in the Western Cape.

Cordier said snow will continue to fall over the mountains in the Western Cape (Matroosberg Nature Reserve and Cederberg Mountains), with ground snow possibly occurring in towns like Sutherland in the Karoo.

“Light snow is also likely over the mountains around the little Karoo and Garden Route.

“On Wednesday morning a light dusting of snow is possible in the Great Karoo (around Fraserberg, Loxton, Murraysburg, Richmond and surrounding areas).”

Please take care of your livestock and pets in these conditions:

• Please take extra care to provide for your pets and livestock during cold periods.
• Management of the cow’s environment- move all livestock to a safe area. e.g. warm place’,
• Providing extra hay/forage/feed to livestock is crucial, as they may require up to double the calories for normal body heat maintenance during extreme cold.
• Do not shear the Angora goat. Also, take extra time to observe livestock, looking for early signs of disease and injury.
• Severe cold-weather injuries or death primarily affect animals that are already debilitated or the very young. Cases of cold weather-related sudden death in calves often result when cattle are suffering from undetected infection, particularly pneumonia. Investigate sudden, unexplained livestock deaths and illnesses promptly to identify a cause and take steps to protect remaining animals.
• Pay special attention to very young and old animals. They may be less able to tolerate temperature extremes and have weaker immune systems.
