New sector leadership vows to build trust and reduce crime in west

Twelve new members were elected to serve the local CPF committee and residents.

The Pretoria West police held a meeting at the Danville clinic to nominate and elect a new Community Police Forum (CPF) executive committee on August 14.

According to Detective Sibongile Vuma, new chairs were selected for sectors 1, 2, and 3, as well as a new chairperson for the entire CPF.

She said the voting process was conducted through a show of hands with two members nominated per portfolio and the house in favour.

“Six candidates were officially appointed to the new CPF executive committee, with an additional six nominated to represent each sector,” said Vuma.

Joseph Nkhumise was selected as the new chairperson of the entire CPF committee.

Nkhumise said he is committed to building trust between police and the community.

“During my reign, I will be a good mediator between police and the community so that locals get to trust police again,” he said.

Nkhumise plans to recruit more CPF members to increase patrols and verify members’ backgrounds to ensure they have no previous criminal cases.

Mariaan Strydom was selected as the new chairperson for Sector 2, covering Philip Nel, West Park, and Danville areas.

Strydom acknowledged the challenges ahead and the high rate of crime in this sector.

She said there are at least two weekly shootings in her area.

“I will be training my team and working with them to fight crime,” said Strydom.

Sphiwe Khumalo was selected as the new chairperson for Sector 3, covering the whole area of Lotus Gardens.

She vowed to make Lotus Gardens a no-go zone for criminals with increased patrols working day and night to ensure safety.

The new leadership emphasised collaboration, training, and community engagement as crucial in fighting crime.

They pledged to work closely with police and community to build trust and reduce crime in Pretoria West.
