Farmer found stabbed to death, throat slit

The suspect also stole items to the value of R300 000.

Police are looking for a suspect after a farmer was stabbed in the back five times, and his throat slit at a Groenfontein farm over the weekend.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk, the police were informed of the attack in Groenfontein around 18:15 on Sunday, while the incident took place the day before.

Van Dyk said on arrival at the scene, officers were directed by a man to a body.

He said the man told police he had come to the property because he was unable to reach the farm owner the day before and found the body around 17:30.

“Upon arrival, he discovered the deceased lying in a pool of blood and immediately contacted police,” he said.

He said emergency services were called in and declared the farmer dead on the scene.

Van Dyk said the deceased sustained approximately five stab wounds to the back, and his throat had been slit.

“Items reported stolen include a Toyota Hilux bakkie, a cellphone, and a laptop, with a combined value of approximately R300 000,” he said.

Van Dyk stated that the stolen vehicle was later recovered on Arbor Road, where it was further examined by crime scene experts and subsequently secured.

He said no suspect has been identified at this stage and the investigation is ongoing.

Van Dyk is urging locals to bring any information that may help identify the killer forward.

“Any relevant information can be directed to the Bronkhorstspruit SAPS.”
