Lois Avenue near Menlyn mall to be beautified

Restoration of the median island, landscaping and rehabilitation of streetlights will be some of the work being done to revive Lois Avenue.

Lois Avenue in the east of Pretoria is set to get a facelift after years of being a den of chaos with taxi operations near Menlyn Mall spilling over the route.

Residents are wondering what is happening in the area, as trenches have been dug recently.

According to the Tshwane metro, this is being done in the tireless pursuit of a more idyllic urban environment,

The facelift will take place along the roadway which used to house taxis and street vendors.

The metro’s urban management section intends to revive Lois Avenue and bring a renewed vibrancy to the area, eradicating rubble and rehabilitating streetlights.

The facelift will look to restore the median island and put in place some landscaping to beautify the area outside the east mall.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the city has established a joint operation through its urban management and regional electricity sections to restore the median island for landscaping purposes.

“The electricity team will also connect the lights as the cables were destroyed,” said Mashigo.

According to Mashigo, the taxi operations and street vending had turned the area into an eyesore.

“The informal taxis had dumped rubble on the median island, however, the taxis have since been relocated,” said Mashigo.

He said before the median island can be restored, the rubble needs to be removed.

“This will be done to allow the electricity team to connect cables in the trenches.”

Mashigo said the soil will be replaced and a mix of compost added to the median island. Thereafter, the landscaping can commence.

“This will form part of the restoring services and beautification (landscaping) of the median island on Lois Avenue to revive the area.”
