Celebrating 30 years of women’s excellence in community media

The event brought together trailblazing women in the sector to share their experiences, challenges and triumphs.

The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) and the Tshwane University of Technology hosted a panel discussion commemorating 30 years of women’s excellence in community media. August 20.

The event brought together trailblazing women in the sector to share their experiences, challenges and triumphs.

The panel discussion, held at the TUT Pretoria campus, featured an impressive line-up of women in community media.

Nyiko Khosa, the chief marketing officer at Completely Agency and former news editor at Soweto TV; journalist Lerato Fekisi; Carol Mohlala, Media Diversity and Diversity Agency board director; Zanele Zwane, representative from the German development cooperation; Prof Bongazana Dondolo, TUT Faculty of humanities deputy dean and others.

These panellists shared their journeys, highlighting the progress and obstacles in their careers.

They also highlighted issues radio stations face and the challenges of women daily. The discussion aimed to give students advice and guide them in the right direction.

Dondolo highlighted both the progress made and the enduring legacy of women in the community media.

“We are delighted to honour and celebrate the memorable role these women have played in shaping the community media landscape. Their significant contribution has not only advanced the industry but also paved the way for greater gender equality within the media sector,” she said.

Fekisi emphasised that women journalists are facing a lot of problems but that they must remain strong. “Despite the many challenges we face as women journalists we have to remain objective at all times,” Fekisi said.

The event celebrated the significant contributions women have made to community media, shaping narratives and amplifying marginalised voices.

It also informed students about the challenges that women face, such as gender inequality and rape.

Another issue is the lack of funding for radio stations, which in some cases leads to them shutting down.
