The event was coordinated by experts from the Department of Social Development, Youth for Survival (NGO) and Miss Influence South Africa (NPO).

Police spokesperson Constable Sibongile Vuma said the initiative was prompted by concerns from college management about student involvement in drug-related activities.

She said the social crime prevention team emphasised the importance of choosing friends wisely and avoiding associations that may lead to criminal behaviour.

“Students were cautioned about the risks of human trafficking, which is alarmingly prevalent in South Africa,” said Vuma.

Vuma stated that students were advised to remain vigilant, walk in groups, and avoid distractions like cellphones and headphones which can make them vulnerable to crime.

She said that the dangers of drug abuse were also highlighted, with experts explaining the long-term effects on individuals’ lives.

Vuma added that students were encouraged to report any criminal activity on campus and seek help when needed.

“In a move to promote gender equality, male students were urged to speak out about their challenges and emotions, emphasising that their feelings are just as valid as those of their female counterparts,” said Vuma.

“They were encouraged to report cases of domestic violence and seek protection orders when necessary,” she concluded.
