CBD licence centre robbed, clients cautioned of possible scams

Residents are warned to be on the lookout for and report any vehicle licensing certificates issued with serial numbers BZ8084001 up to BZ8268000 to the nearest police station, as these are fraudulent.

The Tshwane metro has raised concerns that a scam may result from a recent Pretoria CBD licensing centre robbery.

It said a group of people stormed the C de Wet Licensing Centre on August 11 and disarmed the security personnel on duty.

“They walked away with 92 boxes of face values, containing 2 000 sheets each,” said Roads and Transport MMC Katlego Matheba.

Matheba said the metro believed that criminals were intending to use the stolen items to issue fraudulent motor vehicle registrations, permits, driving licences and traffic register certificates.

“The aftermath of this criminal behaviour is motor vehicle information cloning, as well as contamination of the vehicle registration database.”

She advised residents to be on the lookout for and report any vehicle licensing certificates issued with serial numbers BZ8084001 up to BZ8268000 to the nearest police station.

She said any issuing with these serial numbers is fraudulent and a criminal case has since been opened with the South African Police Service.

“All Tshwane licensing centres are cashless. Moreover, residents must take personal responsibility by ensuring they are assisted by a city official and by also insisting on obtaining the name of the official.”

Clients are urged not make any payment without obtaining an official receipt.

She said robbers use a similar modus operandi to commit crime.
